Case study: Building a secure future in retirement

We all want the money we invest to perform as well as it can. For many clients that’s because they plan to use the accumulated pot to fund their retirement, and keep them in the lifestyle they are accustomed to. Planning and smart investment is crucial to realise retirement goals, and it begins with finding the right Financial Advisor to help you. Here we share the story of Catherine* and how she worked with Moyes Investments to get her retirement plans in order.

Hi Catherine, when you came to Moyes Investments did you already have an active portfolio?

Yes, I’d been working with another IFA but I didn’t think I was getting a particularly good service. I needed a fresh pair of eyes to look at my investments, and to start working with someone who’d be dynamic with my portfolio.

What made you decide Moyes Investments was the right company to help you?

When I met up with Antony Moyes, I liked him and had faith in his ability. Having asked me all sorts of questions about what I wanted and the money I had to invest, he made some recommendations that made absolute sense to me. I take an active interest in financial planning, I don’t simply hand things over to an IFA and say, ‘Do what you will!’. What Antony was suggesting made good sense and I trusted he would do a good job.

What were your financial goals at the start of the process?

It was to make the very best of the pot of money I had. The most sensible suggestion Antony made was that I should move everything over into an ISA. I had ISAs already, but I had lots of other funds too. Antony helped me make better use of the ISA allowance and whittled down the unit trusts that I had. He made changes that were tax efficient. Ending up with investments that are tax free and where you can take an income tax free is great. It was a no-brainer once Antony pointed it out to me. It’s interesting though, as this hadn’t been suggested as a key investment strategy before I met Antony.

Was there anything about the service you received that particularly impressed you?

From the beginning, I’ve always felt that somebody is actively watching my portfolio. I didn’t get the feeling that he’d just choose some funds for me, leave my money there and forget about them. Even at our first review, I could see things were moving in the right direction. Now Antony is a Discretionary Fund Manager (DFM) I know he can be even more agile with my portfolio.  Their Investment Committee meet monthly and monitor all clients’ portfolios so I know my money is being carefully watched, I didn’t have that peace of mind before!

Would you recommend Antony and Moyes Investments to other people looking to invest for their retirement?

I wouldn’t hesitate to and not just for their retirement purposes. I’m very happy with what Antony and the rest of the Moyes team have done, they’ve been brilliant. I love that they are attentive and you get through to an actual person.  I live over 150 miles from their offices but they are always completely accessible.  I receive quarterly updates from Moyes and I have mobile numbers too if I want to discuss or query anything.

I’m 61, so I’ll be getting my pension and finishing work in the next few years. Antony always looks at the whole picture, never just the investments. He takes a holistic view, and he’s looking to my future and helping me to provide for my life in the best possible way.
